What to Pack: Pumping at Work Checklist
Below you’ll find a comprehensive pumping at work checklist of what most moms bring with them to pump during the workday. Some workplaces are super supportive; others may be a little less equipped. Either way, with the right tools, you can make it work!
1. A Reliable Breast Pump
A quality pump is your best friend when you’re away from your baby. Most working moms choose a double electric pump for efficiency, as it allows you to empty both breasts in less time. If you’ll be on the move or want more privacy, wearable pumps like Elvie or Willow can tuck right into your bra and let you pump discreetly during meetings or commutes. Be sure to check if your pump needs to be charged or plugged in and if your work’s nursing area has an outlet. Also, bring any necessary cords, batteries, or backup power! I personally use and love the Spectra S1 Plus electric breast pump. It can be plugged into the wall and has great battery life, so it’s portable! It also has two modes (including a massage mode) great adjustable suctioning power and a quiet motor.
2. All Necessary Pump Parts (Plus a Backup Set)
Each time you pump, you’ll need all your pump’s detachable parts: flanges, valves, membranes, tubing, and backflow protectors. If one piece is left at home or malfunctions, it can throw off your entire day. Keeping a second full set of pump parts in your bag or desk drawer ensures you’re never stuck. Bonus: it saves time if you don’t have access to a sink right away between sessions.
3. Milk Storage Bags or Bottles
You’ll need something to safely collect and store your milk. Breast milk storage bags are compact, disposable, and easy to label and freeze. I personally love these Sposie breastmilk bags. The zip lock is leak-proof, the bag itself is sturdy and self-standing, they’re BPA-free, have an easy tear spout, and the designs are so cute! Some moms prefer reusable bottles, especially if their daycare feeds directly from them. Whichever you choose, make sure to bring enough to cover all your pumping sessions for the day.
4. Cooler Bag with Ice Packs
If you don’t have access to a refrigerator at work (or just want to keep your milk separate) an insulated cooler bag is one of the top must-have pumping at work essentials! Tuck a couple of ice packs inside to keep your milk cold throughout the day and on your commute home. Many pump bags now come with built-in cooler compartments for convenience!
For the “no time to cook” mama:
Being a working mom demands so much time and energy. There’s hardly time to prioritize yourself, let alone meal prep breakfast or work lunches! And maintaining your supply while pumping at work can already be stressful; so let someone else meal prep for you!

5. Hands-Free Pumping Bra
A hands-free pumping bra is one of the best investments for working moms. It holds the flanges in place so you can multitask, relax, or use your break to catch up on emails or scroll Instagram. Being able to pump without holding everything makes a big difference in comfort and productivity. This Kindred Bravely nursing and pumping bra is a favorite of mine. It has a comfy, stretchy material while being supportive enough to hold the bottles and flanges in place while pumping hands free.
6. Cleaning Supplies for Pump Parts
The CDC recommends washing breast pump parts thoroughly after each use. If you don’t have a kitchen sink at work, bring a small bottle of dish soap, a travel-sized bottle brush, and a clean container to hold the parts after washing. You might also find breast pump cleaning wipes helpful for wiping down your pump’s exterior or hard-to-wash areas. Keep a wet/dry bag in your pump bag to separate clean and used items.
7. Nursing Pads & Burp Cloth or Small Towel
Milk leaks and spills are a part of pumping life. Nursing pads help absorb leaks and keep your clothing dry between sessions. A burp cloth or towel is great to have on hand for drying pump parts, dabbing up drips, or wiping off after pumping. Keep one tucked in your bag just in case.
8. Comfortable, Pump-Friendly Clothing
Your outfit can make or break a pumping session. Button-down shirts, zip-up tops, nursing-friendly dresses, or layered cardigans make it easier to get set up quickly and discreetly. Consider keeping a backup shirt at work too—leaks happen, and having a fresh top can save the day.
9. Organized Pump Bag
A good pump bag keeps everything organized and discreet. Look for a bag with multiple compartments, an insulated section for milk, and room for your pump, parts, and personal items. You’re juggling a lot—having a bag that’s functional and stylish helps make the process feel more manageable.

How to Make Pumping at Work Easier
Let’s be real: pumping at work isn’t always easy. But these practical strategies can make the routine feel smoother and less stressful.
1. Set a Realistic Pumping Schedule
Aim to pump every 2–3 hours during your workday to mimic your baby’s feeding routine and maintain your supply. Try blocking time on your calendar as “busy” or “private” to ensure those breaks aren’t accidentally scheduled over.
2. Talk to Your Employer Ahead of Time
Under the U.S. PUMP Act, most employers are legally required to provide reasonable break time and a private, non-bathroom space for pumping. If you’re comfortable, talk to HR or your supervisor ahead of your return. Be clear about how often you’ll need to pump and how long it usually takes—most employers will appreciate your proactive planning.
3. Wash Pump Parts After Every Use
It’s important to clean all pump parts that come into contact with breast milk after each session to prevent bacteria growth. Even if you’re short on time, a quick wash with hot soapy water, followed by air drying on a clean surface, goes a long way in keeping your milk safe for baby.
4. Keep a Backup Kit at Work
Life happens to all of us. You might forget a pump part, spill breastmilk, or need a last-minute change of clothes. Create a small emergency kit for your desk or locker that includes:
- A spare set of pump parts
- Extra milk bags
- A pumping bra
- Nursing pads
- A fresh shirt
Future you will be so thankful!
5. Bring a Photo or Video of Your Baby
Many moms find it easier to relax and trigger a letdown when they see their baby (it releases oxytocin which can trigger a letdown!). Keep a favorite photo or video on your phone, or ask your caregiver to send you little video updates throughout the day. It’s an instant mood boost and a great way to stay connected.

Encouragement for Working Pumping Moms
Let’s pause for a second to recognize something important: You’re doing an amazing job. You’re showing up for your baby and showing up at work. It’s not always easy, but it’s meaningful, and it matters. Here’s what I want you to remember:
- Every ounce counts. Seriously.
- It’s okay if your supply dips at work. You’re still doing your best.
- You are allowed to take up space. Your need to pump is valid.
- This season won’t last forever, but the love you’re giving right now will leave a lasting imprint!
Final Thoughts: You’ve Got This
With the right pumping at work essentials, a little planning, and a lot of grace, you can make pumping at work feel less overwhelming and more doable. Give yourself credit for every pump session, every ounce, and every effort. You are doing something powerful—and you are not alone.
You’ve got this, mama 🤎
